Song of the Day: “Violet!” – Jeremy Messersmith

Jeremy Messersmith has been somewhat of a local Minnesota music icon since the mid-2000s, when his debut record The Alcatraz Kid was released. His particular brand of indie pop has been recognized both here in the Twin Cities and nationally, and he received high praise for his latest release, 2010’s The Reluctant Graveyard.

I discovered Messersmith’s music via 89.3 The Current, and the track “Violet!” really stuck out to me. I was surprised that such a straight-laced catchy tune was made by a Minnesota musician, as most rock and indie outfits around here almost never color all the way inside the lines. The song is by no means cookie-cutter pop, but it will be stuck in your head if you give it a chance.

All three of Messersmith’s albums are available as a name-your-own-price option on Bandcamp, but this link should get you started in the right direction. Happy listening!
