Rare is the indie success story that involves an artist suffering in the trenches for years on end before hitting it big, and Greta Morgan is no exception. At the ripe old age of 16, she co-founded the semi-successful indie outfit The Hush Sound, and when THS went on hiatus in late 2008, Morgan jumped ship and started recording with a new collection of musicians, dubbed Gold Motel.
Now, Morgan and her new troop are going to be playing in their backyard at Lollapalooza this August, which is probably the biggest American music event of the year. The quick rebound has obviously worked well for Morgan, and the tunes are undeniably sunny. An EP release in 2009 (GOLD MOTEL EP) precluded an acclaimed full-length (Summer House), which hit stores a little over a year ago. A second LP is set for release sometime before this year is up.
Gold Motel’s sound is generally happy; I would describe it as a more cohesive and detailed version of Best Coast. Just about all of the songs are sun-kissed and beach-ready. Take a listen for yourself:
