It’s finally here. After a projected spring release, Macklemore, Ryan Lewis and director Zia Mohajerjasbi have released the music video for the song “Wings”.
If you’re new to all of these names, don’t be ashamed; I didn’t know any of these guys until last autumn, but I did have the chance to meet Macklemore and Ryan Lewis at Soundset this past summer. Both guys are stand-up gentlemen, and they make great music together.
This is by far my favorite Macklemore song. He always has a self-imposed political agenda to follow in his rhymes, and “Wings” is no exception. He sticks it to Phil Knight and the Nike company to a gorgeous beat from Lewis. When the heavy bass and snare kick in after a long first verse, it gives me goosebumps like you wouldn’t believe. That’s just when I listen to the song without the visual aid.
Mohajerjasbi’s filmmaking is borderline brilliant, with great symbolism and structure. This was a big-time production for all three of these guys, and they nailed it. Be sure to check out the video below, as well as the trilogy of “making of” vids.
